Turning with style 10If you haven't been to The Somerset Collection in Troy lately, brace for change. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Metro Detroit's ritziest mall -- specifically its primary 940,000-square-foot north wing that opened in August 1996. Coinciding with the milestone, several stores are opening, expanding, renovating or relocating. "A lot of these tenants are initially on 10-year leases," says Nathan Forbes, managing partner of The Forbes Co., which developed the north wing and co-owns Somerset with Troy-based Frankel Associates. Forbes says many retailers took the opportunity to revamp, freeing up new spaces. As a result, this month marks the opening of Barneys New York Co-op, Anne Klein New York and Stuart Weitzman -- three stores that are a first in Michigan and among a only a handful in the country. read more. New Fitness Lady creates 'haven'Marilyn and Van Tyler invested $3 million to build the recently opened Fitness Lady on Sunnybrook Road in Ridgeland. "We tried to make it so that when you come in you feel like you're in a resort," said Marilyn Tyler, owner. "So many of our members say it's their haven that that's why we wanted to make a relaxing and pleasant environment." A fountain, 8-foot crystal chandelier and art gallery set the mood. So do the aqua, gold and terracotta colors used in the 30,000-square-foot club. An indoor pool used for water aerobics classes, whirlpool room with waterfall wall, locker room and dressing areas dominate the first floor. Eleanor Hughes of Madison attends water fitness classes three times a week. "The pool is just lovely in the new place, and the instructors are superb," said Hughes, a member for about 10 years. read more. Sea life abounds on islands near PERUSea lions, seals and birds. Oh, my! You might have thought that the Galapagos were the only islands off the coast of South America with lots of marine life. Well, guess again. Theres another group of islands near the coast of Peru, also in South America, where sea mammals and birds cover nearly every nook and cranny. About 150 miles southeast of Lima, Peru, lies a group of islands called Islas Ballestas (pronounced ees-lus buh-jay-stus), thats home to fur seals, sea lions and thousands of birds, including sea gulls, cormorants, boobies and even vultures! The islands are jagged rock cliffs, most with very steep sides. Some of the islands have caves carved into them by the ocean, and a few have small, pebbly beaches where the seals and sea lions love to sunbathe. The males sometimes fight over territory on the beaches while the females try to keep their pups out of the way. read more. Star gear's hereThe fashionistas sighed. Mirrors, Baroque chandeliers, walls and staircases shining like black crystal, leopard skin-covered doors with bold, gold letters "D" and "G." Shanghai's loyal fashionistas have been waiting a long time for this Hollywood-style fashion feast. Finally, Dolce & Gabbana opened its first store in Shanghai, along with Asia's first Dolce & Gabbana bar. Thousands of trendy people thronged the new store along the Bund last Friday night.
